How AI Shopping Assistants Are Changing How We Buy Clothes: An Honest Look
For most of online shopping's history, buying clothes meant filters and scrolling: pick a category, set a size, sort by price, and hope the photos tell the truth. AI shopping assistants are changing that. Instead of searching for products, you can describe what you need, and the assistant does the narrowing.
We run an AI concierge at ShopFashion.si, so we have a stake in this. That's exactly why we want to be clear about what the technology does well, what it doesn't, and how to use it wisely.
What has actually changed
Describing instead of searching. The biggest change is the starting point. Instead of typing "black dress," you can say, "I need an outfit for a winter wedding, I run cold, I prefer covered shoulders, and my budget is modest." The assistant turns that into a shortlist.
Large platforms are moving this way too. In a May 20, 2025 announcement on its official blog, Google described a shopping experience in its AI Mode where people could describe what they wanted conversationally, and in a November 13, 2025 update it described further conversational shopping features in Search.
Virtual try-on with your own photo. Try-on used to mean seeing clothes on a model who might look nothing like you. In the same May 2025 announcement, Google said its try-on experiment in Search Labs in the U.S. would let shoppers upload a full-length photo of themselves to see how certain apparel, including shirts, pants, skirts and dresses, might look on them.
Assistants that can buy, with permission. Some assistants can now complete parts of checkout. Google's November 2025 update said its "agentic checkout" was starting to roll out in the U.S. with eligible merchants, and that it would ask permission first and buy only after the shopper confirmed the purchase and shipping details.
Features like these change quickly and vary by country, so check each service's current details.
What AI shopping does well
- Narrowing a huge choice. Turning thousands of options into a handful that match your needs, style and budget.
- Thinking in outfits. Suggesting pieces that work together, not just one item at a time.
- Explaining the why. A good assistant tells you why it picked something, so you can judge whether its reasoning fits.
- Being patient. You can refine endlessly: "less formal," "warmer," "different color."
What it can't do (yet)
Honesty matters here:
- It can't feel fabric. Weight, softness and drape are still hard to judge on a screen.
- Try-on is a preview, not a fitting. It can help you judge style and color, but it can't guarantee fit. Check size charts and measurements. Our size chart guide can help.
- It only knows what you tell it, and what the seller's listing says. If listings are inaccurate, suggestions will be too.
- Screens vary. Colors can look different in person.
- It doesn't replace your judgment. You're the one who knows how you want to feel in your clothes.
How we approach it at ShopFashion.si
- The concierge suggests; you decide. Nothing is bought without your approval.
- We don't take payment or card data. You check out on each seller's own site.
- Try-on is consent-only. You choose whether to upload a photo.
- Affiliate links are disclosed. We may earn a commission when you buy.
- Prices, shipping and returns are set by each seller. Check before you buy.
- AI assistants can shop here too, always with a human approving the purchase. Our agents page explains how.
How to get the most out of an AI shopping assistant
- Be specific about context: the occasion, the climate, your dress code.
- Share what you already own so suggestions work with your wardrobe.
- Say what you avoid: fabrics, cuts, colors.
- Give a budget.
- Ask why when a suggestion surprises you.
- Double-check details on the seller's page: measurements, materials and policies.
The bottom line
AI shopping assistants don't make choosing clothes automatic, and they shouldn't. What they do is turn "I know what I need but can't find it" into a short, explained list. For many people that's the hardest part of shopping. Read our new way to shop for clothes to see how our concierge works step by step.
FAQ
Can AI really pick clothes for me? It can suggest clothes based on what you describe and explain its reasoning. You make the final choice, and you should check fit and material details.
Is virtual try-on accurate? It's a preview to help judge style and color. It can't guarantee fit, so check size charts and seller measurements.
Will an AI assistant buy things without asking me? Services differ. The agentic checkout Google described asks permission first. At ShopFashion.si, nothing is purchased without your approval, and checkout happens on the seller's site.
